Systems and Society Research Lab

The Systems and Society Research Lab (SSRL) is a new lab in the Cornell Systems Engineering Program. The SSRL fosters a collaborative, transdisciplinary sociotechnical systems research environment that brings in researchers from colleges outside of engineering as well as community and industry stakeholders. The modeling and simulation of social and sociotechnical systems using a systems approach is at the core of the SSRL and is critical to finding effective and sustainable solutions to societal problems. Another goal of the SSRL is to inform sustainable decision-making by bringing social and cultural system modeling together with environmental and economic modeling. To achieve these goals, we use Living Labs as a method for stakeholder integration into the technical research process. By engaging many stakeholder groups, including policy makers, Living Labs allow for inclusive policy decisions – with a high potential for research leading to impactful societal change. The outcome of Living Labs is often a policy simulator – a simulation model with a user interface that allows policy decision-makers to test policy impact (policy system behavior).
